Palestinian Worldbuilding: Sci-Fi Writing Course
With designer in residence Callum Copley
Jan: 27th | Feb: 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th | March: 3rd, 10th 17th, Hosh Jalsa, Birzeit
Science Fiction is an opportunity – free from the restraints of time – to understand ourselves; our hopes and our fears, and imagine a world radically different than the one we are presented with today. It is a place where we can create exciting new futures and explore how we might get there tomorrow. This January we invite artists, writers, students, and other imaginative minds to join Disarming Design from Palestine for eight weekly workshops focused on Science Fiction writing; exploring the genres potentials in a Palestinian context.
The course will begin with an introduction to Sci-Fi and look at its historical connections to social and political movements across the world. Next, from unique characters to believable imaginary worlds, the group will examine what is involved in creating exceptional Sci-Fi stories and will practice different writing techniques used in making them. Throughout the series of workshops participants will engage in drawing tasks, readings, discussions, and movie screenings that will help them develop their own ideas for a story. Through one-to-one tuition and feedback each individual will complete a story of their own to be published in a group publication. This unique collection of stories will be printed and distributed by Disarming Design from Palestine and its partners across Europe, with all proceeds supporting further Palestinian creative development.
